As an artist, Daniel Gregory seeks to capture the past and the modern in his works. The brilliant dichotomy of that which has been with that which now is has always been something that he has strove to place in his renderings and depictions. The buildings of the past, the complex gyrations of an ancient banyan tree, the beautiful play of light sometimes taken for granted are the wonders which he sets out to present in his artwork.
Born and raised in Louisiana, he is primarily self-taught. With pointers on technique from his father, his art is a matter of countless hours of practice, trial and error, and gleanings from the many hours of reading art magazines and books. He began painting acrylics at the age of ten, drawing in pen and ink at twelve years of age, and washing watercolors when he entered college at seventeen. His first show was at the age of twelve at LaCour's in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
A user of Sennelier watercolors (a French paint known for its vibrancy of color), Daniel visited Le Magasin Sennelier in Paris. After meeting Mons. Sennelier, he learned of the art of mixing ones own colors. Now he exclusively uses his own paints, hand ground by himself in the tradition of the old masters. It is this extra step, this attention to quality and accuracy, that leads to the brilliance of color seen in his paintings.
Faithful representation with an eye to preserve rather than stylize is the halmark of Daniel's work. Each piece of artwork is wrought with the idea that future generations may one day look upon it in remembrance of what was once their heritage. Each piece is rendered to be as realistic and accurate as possible, highlighting contrast and color.
The notion is to capture a fleeting moment in time...
